Woo-Hoo – Standard Time Again!

What a relief – back to Standard Time. I feel much more grounded now.
What a terrific weekend this was, weather-wise. We took walks around the block and I took some more photos of the fall colors. As a result, I moved the four pics in the previous post that were in Flickr “Misc Set” to a new set called “Fall Colors 2006” which includes the new photos from this weekend. What I really need is to take the camera for a drive down Tennessee or Kentucky Street. Those make for a marvelous view. Some folks have Halloween decorations up, a couple of which were a hoot. If you take a look at the entire set of Fall Colors 2006 shots, you’ll see what I mean.

Besides taking photos of the fall colors, I used the camera’s “video” feature to make some clips to capture sounds to go along with the scenes. There was a wonderful breeze making the trees even more “alive” with movement and the sound of the wind rustling the leaves was something that competes quite admirably with the sound of a surf breaking on the beach. Additionally, some of the trees were chock full of roosting birds making quite a racket; including the cottonwood tree in the back yard. If I can get it right, the photos at the right will link to a clip of the trees blowing on Brush Creek Dr., and to a clip of Becky and me trying to startle the birds in the cottonwood. The effort was futile. If you play the clip, by the way, I will tell you now there is no dog.Walking on Brush Creek

Early Fall Colors

A couple days ago I noticed some interesting (to me, anyway) colors as I looked toward the back yard. You can click on thumbnails below and choose among several sizes to look at, and/or see them in the “Fall Colors 2006″ set on Flickr. You might enjoy re-visiting the other pictures in that set; I always do. A couple of them never fail to bring a smile no matter what’s got me down at the moment. You’ll know which ones.

Evelyn’s 80th Birthday

Last Saturday (Oct. 7) was Evelyn’s (Becky’s mom) 80th birthday. Family members gathered at Wellsville Manor for a birthday party. Evelyn was in good spirits, and we had a good time visiting with everybody. I took some photos you can see at my Flickr account. It was also a very nice day. Once in a while here in Kansas we have a day of weather that’s as good as can be found anywhere in the world. It’s rare, but it happens.Evelyn Geiss

I just had my one year anniversary with my company. I’m pretty happy about it. This means that it’s possible that I’m that much closer to getting to the position that I want, in-house graphic designer. (Though that will probably take many years.) It also means that I’m having to work all the time. Something else has been keeping me from really enjoying it, though. Steve came to my office one year ago today and wanted to take me to lunch. He said he had some really bad news. First I said, Mom and Dad? Then I said, You and Kathie are still getting married, right? He actually was there to tell me that Cinnamon had to be put to sleep that night. He took me to Peet’s coffee and we put cinnamon in our chai teas and it blew away a bit in the wind. Of course, I didn’t think much of it until later on that afternoon.

I went to Peet’s this morning for coffee and shook the cinnamon in my cup and it didn’t blow away. I actually think about that moment many times when I’m at the coffee shop.

I’ve been thinking about putting this story ahead up on the blog for a long time, but now it’s finally the best time.

One night in February I was walking past a restaurant and there was this dog tied up to the parking meter in front. She must have been the same mix that Cinnamon was, half collie-half australian shepherd. This dog had a long, waggy tail- much like what Cinnamon’s would have looked like if she had one- she was also the same golden brown color. I started petting this dog and she was so sweet, same mannerism as Cinnamon, and when I paused from petting her to get a better look at her, she stuck her nose under my arm and nudged it up to keep petting. I just looked at her and started crying and couldn’t stop. She was so much like her, I couldn’t believe the resemblance. I finally got up and went to a nook between shops on the sidewalk.

I heard a man, some feet away, asking me if I was okay, and if something had happened. He was an employee of the restaurant, leaning out the window, making sure I was alright. It seemed I was meant to talk to him, so I walked over and told him that this dog reminded me of my dog, who got sick and had to be put to sleep a few months back. I explained how I felt bad about not seeing her for a really long time before she passed away. I didn’t think I would be able to leave this spot or this dog.

He took my hand and told me to not hold on to the sadness, but hold on to sweet memories. He said, One day I will have my dog again, she will find me. I will know it’s her, because she’ll jump up on me like she did before and bite my nose.

How would he know that?

I miss her.

Georgina Chappell

I received an email from our cousin Adrian Sheppard, who visited the UK last year. While there, he located a document about the history of the Hillesley Baptist Church, with the following entry:

Hillesley Baptist Church 1730-1980, by Kathleen CHAPPELL Page 18. “Three members, Frank Cooper, George Davis and Jesse Chappell, emigrated to America in 1906. George Davis later returned from Missouri, bringing an American wife. Frank Cooper trained for the ministry, achieved his doctorate and was for many years a Baptist minister in Decatur and in Princeton, Illinois. Jesse Chappell also became a Baptist minister but did not keep in contact with this Church, so no details of his ministry are known.”

Adrian was also kind enough to provide a certificate of birth for Jesse’s sister, Georgina. The following links will bring up either a jpg image or pdf file. Note the absence of identification of the father, as was the case with Jesse’s certificate. It indicates the father’s occupation as “domestic servant”, however, this may actually have referred to Charlotte rather than the father. I’ve noticed, however, that the certificate gives Georgina’s date of birth as Jan. 1, 1807, obviously an error. The upper portion of the certificate recites that it’s an 1861 birth which is consistent with information we already had. Note, also, that her birth name is given as Georgina Rose, rather than Sarah. One of Jesse’s brothers, Charles, had children whom he named “Jesse” and “Rose”, apparently naming them after his brother and sister.
