The Last Clematis
2019-10-09: The last clematis of 2019. It was 62° when photo was taken Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.; 48 hours later it’s 35° and the weather service says: “FREEZE WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 11 PM THIS EVENING TO 9 AM CDT SATURDAY. Temperatures are expected to drop to between 29 and 32 degrees Friday night.” Yep, and we’re already seeing commercials for Christmas. Well, Spring is right around the corner. I should service the lawn mower this weekend, the grass will be knee high sooner than I can sneeze.

Big booming thunderstorm last night that took out the electricity around 1:00 a.m. When I called it in on their no humans automated tell us about your power outage number the robot said they’d have it back on around 5:00 a.m. That didn’t happen. Nor did it happen at 7:00 a.m. nor 10:00 a.m. nor noon nor 3:00 p.m. According to their website, the outage area was basically just our neighborhood, the only area in Lawrence that was down, only 129 customers without power. Hmmph. So we took off in the car to go to a movie but I forgot to take a long sleeve shirt in case the theater was too cold. Turned around and went back to the house and the power was back on. Lesson learned. When the power goes out, just leave for a few minutes and come back.
The movie we saw was was the new Lion King. Pretty blah except for the animation which was incredible. It was like watching real animals (except they talked) in real landscape. Visually, it was a fantastic movie.

Oh boy! 6:00 a.m. and it’s 18° with 20 mph wind and feels like 3° and there’s ice covering the driveway and street, with snow to start at dawn, 3 inches or so predicted by noon when temp will climb to a balmy 20°. Well, as they say, it could be worse, like if the power goes out. Reckon I’ll toss some ice melt on the driveway before it snows and watch the KU basketball game, assuming we have electricity.
UPDATE: Threw some ice melt on about the first one-fourth of the driveway and then waited for snow. It came to the extent of about three inches. Neighbor Justin then showed up with his snowblower (he called it his “new toy”) and got rid of the snow, exposing the ice beneath so I spread more ice melt on the rest of the driveway. Still cold as the dickens. And KU lost. At night after went to bed the wind was blowing and neighbor Alan’s tree branches were rubbing on the power line which connects to house just outside the bedroom window and it made spooky noise that kept me awake but not Becky. It made me think of all the other things I haven’t gotten done with this freakin’ house.
